The Department of Asian and African Studies at the Humboldt University Berlin is hiring a predoctoral project researcher, who will join the European Research Council-funded project on “Power, Politics and Contestation in Global Technical Standard-Setting (TECHtonics)”, led by Prof. Dr. Sarah Eaton.

Employing mixed methods, TECHtonics seeks to understand how and whysome developing countries manage to acquire “standards power,” in spite of high technical and financial barriers to participate in this area and analyze the multifaceted forms of contestation now unfolding in standardization.

 

Job description

  • scientific services for research in the project “Power, Politics and Contestation in Global Technical Standard-Setting (TECHtonics)”
  • studying unprecedented transformation and contestation in one key domain of global economic governance: technical standard-setting
  • assisting the project team with data analysis, project publications, ERC grant management and organization of associated project events
  • the dissertation project will address a topic covered in the project work package on “rising standards power” and be based on empirical research in one or more of the three different regions (Kenya, India, China)

 

Requirements

  • completed master’s degree by the time of appointment
  • field open to a social science discipline (e.g. political science, economics or sociology) or related field (e.g. area studies)
  • fluency in English (knowledge of German desirable but not a must)
  • ability to communicate at a high level in one or more main languages spoken in the countries under study (e.g. Mandarin, Swahili, Hindi)
  • willingness to re-locate to Berlin

  • first experience or strong interest in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • interest and capacity to undertake fieldwork stays in one or more of the regions under study
  • research focus on standardization or closely related issue

 

The successful candidate will join a small and collegial research team located in the heart of Berlin. There is scope for project members to pursue individual projects while contributing to collaborative project outputs. Generous funding for this project will cover conference travel, extended fieldwork stays and all other research and dissemination costs.
